Brennan Will Miss Finland Friendly

Jim Brennan did not join the Men’s World Cup Team in Finland due to a thigh injury which has kept him out of the lineup with Norwich all season.



Brennan had hoped to be healthy and ready to play but suffered a setback. He will not be replaced on the squad with assistant coach Nick Dasovic being available for selection if needed.

Miller Announces Finland Roster

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Men’s World Cup Team interim Head Coach Colin Miller today announced his 18-player roster for the international friendly against Finland on October 11 in Tampere, Finland. The game will be shown on Rogers Sportsnet on tape delay. The squad includes several players who have not played for Canada in some time. Defender Mark Watson and striker Paul Peschisolido return to the team for the first time since playing against Malta in November 2001. Watson is coming off winning his first A-League championship with the Charleston Battery and will be looking to add to his 68 caps while Peschisolido is in his third season with Sheffield United of the English First Division.

Canada Will Play USA On Saturday

Portland, Oregon – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team will play the United States in the third place game in Carson, California on Saturday, October 11, 2003 after losing 2-1 to Sweden tonight in the semi-final game in front of a sellout crowd of 27,623 spectators.



After 64 minutes of scoreless play, Kara Lang gave Canada the lead on a free kick from 22 yards out that slid through Swedish goalkeeper Caroline Joensson’s fingers and off the left post and into the net.



Sweden would equalize in the 79th minute when Malin Moestrom found a way past Andrea Neil to barely beat a diving Canadian goalkeeper Taryn Swiatek into the right side of the net from 16 yards out.

Canada Advances To World Cup Semi-finals

Portland, Oregon – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team will play Sweden in the semi-final of the Women’s World Cup after beating China 1-0 on a goal by Charmaine Hooper at PGE Park in Portland, Oregon, Thursday night.



Hooper gave the Canadians a dream start in the 8th minute when she raced on to a deep ball from Diana Matheson and beat the onrushing Chinese goalkeeper Wenxia Han with a header into the open goal.



“This is a historic day for soccer in Canada,” said Canadian head coach Even Pellerud. “I am so proud of my team. This is a young team and it is only going to get better. This is a major accomplishment for our program. I can’t say enough about my players.”

Canada’s Quarterfinal Live On Sportsnet

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association is pleased to announce that Rogers Sportsnet has revised their schedule to broadcast LIVE across the entire network Canada’s Women’s World Cup match against China at 10:30 p.m. (ET)/7:30 (PT) from PGE Park in Portland, Oregon.



Sportsnet will broadcast both of Thursdays quarterfinal games LIVE beginning with Germany playing Russia at 7:30 pm (ET)/4:30 pm (PT) followed by Sportsnet News then Canada’s match against China.



Due to programming commitments with Major League Baseball, Sportsnet was originally scheduled to broadcast Canada’s game on a half hour running delay on non digital cable networks.

The Road To FIFA World Cup 2006 Begins Next January

30.09.2003 – The long, winding road to the FIFA World Cup Finals of Germany 2006 will begin for the 34 CONCACAF entries in a little less than four months time, based on the final format proposal submitted to FIFA.



The first games will be played on the weekend of 17-18 January 2004, with the last ones scheduled for 12 and 16 November 2005; almost two years of intense competition to see who will represent the Confederation in Germany.



The dates used for the extensive qualifying schedule include those set aside in the FIFA International Calendar as well as dates reserved for Confederation and FIFA competitions.
