Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Women’s World Cup Team head coach Even Pellerud has announced his 20-player roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Olympic Qualifications in San Jose, Costa Rica from February 25 – March 5, 2004. The Canadian team travelled on Tuesday, February 17 to begin final preparations for next week’s qualifications.
Canada will compete in Group A with Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Panama and will begin against Jamaica on Thursday, February 26th at 4:00 p.m. (local). Canada will then play Panama on Saturday, February 28th at 1:00 p.m. (local) before ending group play against Costa Rica on Monday, March 1st at 8:00 p.m. (local).
Ottawa, Ontario – L’entraîneur-chef Even Pellerud de l’équipe canadienne féminine de Coupe du monde a dévoilé son alignement de 20 joueuses pour le tournoi de qualification olympique de la CONCACAF à San José, au Costa Rica, du 25 février au 5 mars 2004. Les membres de l’équipe ont voyagé mardi le 17 février, afin d’entreprendre leurs derniers préparatifs avant le début du tournoi.
Le Canada se retrouve au sein du Groupe A avec le Costa Rica, la Jamaïque et le Panama et débutera contre la Jamaïque, jeudi le 26 février à 16 h 00 (Heure locale). Les Canadiennes joueront ensuite contre le Panama, samedi le 28 février à 13 h 00, puis le Costa Rica, lundi le 1er mars à 20 h 00.
Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association is proud to announce the selection of the Women’s World Cup Team and Head Coach Even Pellerud as finalists for the 31st Annual Canadian Sport Award by the Spirit of Sport Foundation.
The Women’s World Cup Team was selected in the Female Team of the Year category for their fourth place finish at the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in the United States last fall.
“What an honour it is to be a candidate for this award,” said Pellerud. “This is significant and confirms the increased status of soccer in Canada. It will provide additional motivation for the players in the short and long term.”
In addition to the selection of the team, Pellerud is a finalist in the Coach of the Year category of the awards. Pellerud’s nomination by Right To Play (formerly Olympic Aid), an international NGO based in Toronto was fully supported by the CSA.

L’équipe féminine de Coupe du monde est en nomination dans la catégorie « Équipe féminine de l’Année » à la suite de sa quatrième place à la Coupe du monde 2003 de la FIFA aux États-Unis l’automne dernier.
« Quel honneur d’être candidat pour ce prix, » a déclaré Pellerud. « C’est signifiant et confirme le statut montant du soccer au pays. C’est une motivation additionnelle pour les joueuses, à court et à long terme. »
The Canadian Soccer Association today released their 2003 Soccer Demographics Report which again showed an increase in overall soccer registration in Canada, surpassing the 800,000 mark. The total number of Canadians playing soccer is 825,031 which translates into a 4.5% increase or 35,742 additional players from 2002.
Female registration has increased by 12% or 35,718 players. This is the largest growth recorded since 1999, when female stats were first documented. The large increase in female registration is in part due to the success of the FIFA U-19 Women’s Championship which took place in August/September 2002. The Canadian Women’s U-19 Team earned the silver medal.
Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team was defeated 2-0 by the United States on Tuesday, February 3rd, at the Four Nations Women’s Tournament in Shenzhen, China PR. Canada placed last in the tournament after losing all three games. The team will begin to return from China on Wednesday, February 4th.
This was Canada’s first match against the United States since the third place match at the 2003 Women’s World Cup in Carson, California on October 11th, 2003 to whom Canada lost 3-1.
Lindsey Tarpley scored first in the 13th minute after receiving a throw in from Shannon MacMillan. Tarpley rolled around Charmaine Hooper and sent the ball from four yards out through the legs of Canadian Goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc.

Le Canada termine dernier au classement du tournoi après avoir perdu ses trois matchs. Les joueuses rentreront au pays à compter de mardi, le 4 février.
Il s’agissait du premier match entre ces deux équipes depuis le match pour la troisième place à la Coupe du monde de 2003 à Carson, en Californie, le 11 octobre 2003. Le Canada avait alors subi un revers de 3 à 1.
Lindsey Tarpley a marqué le premier but du match à la 13e minute, après avoir reçu une rentrée de touche de Shannon MacMillan. Tarpley a contourné Charmaine Hooper et a tiré le ballon sur une courte distance, entre les jambes du gardien Karina LeBlanc.
Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team were defeated 3-1 by 2003 Women’s World Cup silver medalists, Sweden in Shenzhen, China PR on Sunday, February 1st, 2004, at the Four Nations Women’s Tournament.
Canada produced six open goal chances early in the game, but Sweden capitalized with a great shot by Malin Moström in the 33rd minute of play.
Sweden would seize a three goal lead with two additional goals scored by Victoria Svensson and Josefine Öqvist in the 40th and 71st minutes respectfully.
Forward Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia put the ball into the net in the 76th minute for Canada’s lone goal of the match.

Le Canada a obtenu six occasions de marquer tôt dans le match mais ce sont les Suédoises qui ont capitalisé les premières sur un tir précis de Malin Moström à la 33e minute de jeu.
La Suède a pris une avance de trois buts grâce à Victoria Svensson et Josefine Öqvist, qui ont marqué à la 40e et à la 71e minute de jeu.
L’attaquante Christine Sinclair (Burnaby, C.-B.) a marqué l’unique but du Canada à la 76e minute de jeu.
