San José, COSTA RICA – La CONCACAF a dévoilé aujourd’hui la composition de l’équipe d’étoiles de son tournoi de qualification olympique féminin. Cette sélection a été effectuée par le groupe d’études techniques de la CONCACAF. Sept joueuses ont aussi reçu une mention d’honneur.
Le gardien de but canadien Karina LeBlanc a été sélectionné au sein de l’équipe ainsi que les défenseurs Joy Fawcett (É.-U.), Sharlota Nonen (CAN) et Gabriela Trujillo (CRC).
En milieu de terrain, le Groupe d’études technique a retenu les Américaines Shannon Boxx et Aly Wagner, la Costa Ricaine Cindy Rodriguez et la Mexicaine Monica Vergara tandis que la Costa Ricaine Shirley Cruz, la Mexicaine Maribel Dominguez et l’Américaine Abby Wambach ont été les attaquantes choisies.
Ottawa, Ontario – L’équipe canadienne féminine de Coupe du monde a vaincu le Costa Rica 4 à 0 aujourd’hui pour terminer au troisième rang du tournoi de qualification olympique de la CONCACAF à San José, au Costa Rica.
L’attaquante Christine Sinclair a marqué deux fois et tandis que Charmaine Hooper et Aysha Jamani ont inscrit les autres buts du Canada.
Andrea Neil, originaire de Vancouver, a disputé son 100e match international en cette occasion.
Les gardiens de but Karina LeBlanc et Erin McLeod se sont partagés les honneurs du jeu blanc.
Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Women’s World Cup Team defeated host, Costa Rica, 2-1 late last night to advance to the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Canada finished first in Group A and will now face Mexico who ranked second in Group B play. The winner will earn one of two CONCACAF spots at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Canada has won 10 straight games against Mexico and will attempt to make it 11 on Wednesday, March 3 at, Estadio Nacional in San Jose.
“Canada’s first 30 minutes of the game represented our best performance so far in this tournament,” said head coach Even Pellerud. “Fortunately we were able to capitalize on great offensive pressures thanks to clinical finishes by Christine Latham and Aysha Jamani.”
Latham opened the scoring in the 7th minute followed by a goal by Jamani in the 21st minute. Jamani has now scored five goals during this tournament which ties her for first in goal scoring with Patricia Perez from Mexico.

En vertu de son premier rang au sein du Groupe A, le Canada affrontera le Mexique, deuxième du Groupe B, mercredi le 3 mars. Le Canada a remporté ses 10 derniers matchs contre le Mexique.
« Nos 30 premières minutes ont été le théâtre de notre meilleure prestation jusqu’à maintenant à ce tournoi, » a indiqué l’entraîneur-chef Even Pellerud. « Heureusement, nous avons su capitaliser sur notre pression à l’attaque en raison des finitions cliniques de Christine Latham et d’Aysha Jamani. »
With the first round of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2006 ™ now well under way, a draw was held in London by FIFA on Sunday February 29 to determine the schedule and order of matches during the semi-final stage of CONCACAF qualifying. These games are due to take place from August – November 2004.
The original World Cup™ draw held by FIFA in Frankfurt in December already determined how the three CONCACAF qualifying semi-final groups would be configured and the schedule of games had been previously approved by FIFA.
Goals by Christine Latham and Aysha Jamani led Canada to a 2-1 victory over Costa Rica on Monday in women’s Olympic soccer qualifying, late Monday in Costa Rica.
Canada will now face Mexico in the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament semi-final on Wednesday while Costa Rica will face the United States, winner of the other group. The winners of those games will go to Athens.
Canada, which finished fourth at the 2003 World Cup, pressed hard at the start of the match at Costa Rica’s National Stadium. Latham struck six minutes into the match. Jamani added a second goal at 20 minutes with a shot that went through the legs of defender Monica Salazar, confusing goalkeeper Alejandra Alvarez.

Canada’s second win in the tournament guarantees a spot in the semi-finals on Wednesday, March 3rd. Young 16-year old Aysha Jamani of Calgary led the rout with four goals.
In the 13th minute, Christine Latham beat Panamanian goalkeeper Monica Franco after receiving a chip from Andrea Neil for Canada’s first of the match.
Jamani in only her fifth appearance for Canada scored her first with an open net shot off a rebound in the 22nd minute.
