Yallop Announces Roster For N. Ireland

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Men’s National Team head coach Frank Yallop today named his 16-player roster for the upcoming international friendly against Northern Ireland in Belfast on February 9. The game will be played at Windsor Park with an 8:00 p.m. local time kickoff.



“This is our first international friendly since the Wales game last year and it will be good to get a quality game under our belts,” said Yallop. “The Gold Cup this summer is an important event for us and this is part of the preparation process as we gear up for the tournament.”



Eleven of the players selected played in Canada’s 1-0 win over Guatemala on November 17, 2004. Yallop has also chosen defender Marco Reda, who is now playing with Aalborg in Denmark, along with midfielder Mike Klukowski who recently signed with FC Brugge in Belgium.

2005 Gold Cup Venues announced

NEW YORK (Wednesday, 26 January 2005) – CONCACAF (The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) today unveiled the stadiums that will host matches in the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cupâ„¢, the eighth edition of the tournament that crowns the region’s top national team. The 2005 event will feature more games in more cities than ever before, as a record seven stadiums in six US cities will host 25 matches from 6-24 July. Previous editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup have been held in up to three different venues.



The 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cupâ„¢ venues include four stadiums new to the event; Qwest Field in Seattle (Washington); the Home Depot Center near Los Angeles in Carson (California); Reliant Stadium in Houston (Texas); and Giants Stadium close to New York City in East Rutherford (New Jersey). The other three venues are the Orange Bowl in Miami (Florida); Gillette Stadium close to Boston in Foxboro (Massachusetts), both of which were Gold Cup venues in 2003, and; the L.A. Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles (California) which last saw Gold Cup action in 2000.

“KIDS GIVING TO KIDS”; CSA and SOS Children’s Villages Canada Embark on a Soccer Equipment Relief Campaign

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association (CSA), in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Canada (SOS), are calling on soccer associations and clubs, nation-wide, to aid by sending soccer equipment to Sri Lanka’s tsunami children in March. [Background] [Benefits of Sport] [Fact Sheet]
The CSA is asking that soccer associations and clubs, across the country, help collect soccer boots, balls, shin pads, uniforms and other soccer apparel to be sent to Sri Lanka’s SOS children. This program, initiated by CSA Technical Programs Manager, David Benning, on behalf of the CSA National Coaching staff, is an attempt to add to the global tsunami relief efforts.
“Children gain so much from playing sports; sportsmanship, making new friends, learning to be a team player, physical exercise, but most importantly to set aside the immediate problems they face and perhaps, smile,” said Andy Sharpe, President of the Canadian Soccer Association.

Eleven Cities Intend To Bid for the FIFA WYC 2007

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) has received 11 letters of intent, from 11 cities across Canada, to bid to host a venue for the FIFA World Youth Championship 2007. Including Edmonton and Toronto, which have already been pre-determined as the two major venues, a total of 13 cities are interested in hosting the Championships. A total of six cities will co-host the FIFA World Youth Championship, including Edmonton and Toronto, as well as four additional cities to be selected on May 4, 2005. Letters of intent have been received from Calgary, Hamilton, Laval, London, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Vancouver, Victoria, and Winnipeg. “I am absolutely delighted with the response we have had to date from cities all across Canada to our call for letters of intent to host the FIFA World Youth Championships in 2007,” stated Andy Sharpe, President of The Canadian Soccer Association and Chair of the National Organizing Committee.

Senior Women Hold First Camp of 2005

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Women’s World Cup Team Head Coach Even Pellerud has invited 22-players to attend the program’s first camp of 2005 from January 20th to 30th in Vancouver, BC. The roster includes a mix of youth and veteran players and consists of 10 players from the Under-19 Women’s World Championship pool. The camp’s focus will be on practices and scrimmages, while camps in the spring and summer will be more game related. “While our Under-19 team received major focus in 2004, it is now time to concentrate on a new cycle for the Women’s World Cup team leading up to the CONCACAF Qualifying tournament in 2006, and ultimately the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China,” stated Pellerud.

Tsunami Children Relief

OTTAWA, Ontario, January 14, 2005 – Rogers Sportsnet, on behalf of SOS Children’s Villages Canada and the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA), will be airing a PSA on Saturday, January 15, 2005 in request of donations for tsunami relief. The National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Canada, Boyd McBride states: “It is wonderful to see how organizations of all kinds have mobilized to respond to the desperate situation in South Asia. Rogers Sportsnet and the Canadian Soccer Association have generously provided an opportunity to inform Canadians of the scale of the disaster, and given them a way to help. The Canadian Soccer Association has been a great supporter of SOS Children’s Villages Canada for many years, but this initiative has taken that support to a new level.”

Yallop Announces Florida Training Camp Roster

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Men’s National Team head coach Frank Yallop today named his 16-player roster for the upcoming training camp to be held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida from January 13-22. Yallop has selected the majority of his players from the Canadian A-League teams with five players from the A-League champion Montreal Impact, four from the Vancouver Whitecaps and two from the Toronto Lynx. The Impact players include 2004 Olympic team players Adam Braz and Andrew Olivieri as well as defender Nevio Pizzolitto who was playing with San Diego of the MISL up until last week when the franchise folded. Sandro Grande, who appeared in four World Cup Qualifiers last year will attend the camp along with newcomer Patrick Leduc.

Sinclair Claims Top College Award

Canadian international Christine Sinclair of the University of Portland and senior midfielder Danny O’Rourke of Indiana University are the winners of the 2004 Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy, presented to the top female and male players in NCAA Division I soccer. The winners were decided by a vote of current National Soccer Coaches Association of America members at the NCAA Division I level. Sinclair (Burnaby, British Columbia) scored 22 goals, 11 assists and 10 game-winners during the 2004 season en route to winning college soccer’s top prize. She finished fourth nationally in total points and tied for third in goals. Sinclair was named West Coast Conference Player of the Year for the second time in her career and led the Pilots to the quarterfinals of the 2004 NCAA Tournament.
