The opponents: China 2007

So just who will Canada be facing in the opening round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup China 2007? Almost four months ago, Canada’s women’s national team was drawn into Group C with Norge (Norway), Australia and Ghana.

“Norway will be considered the favorites in Group C but we should put in a good fight for second place” says coach Even Pellerud. “We know Australia quite well but we will need to scout the African team during our preparations”.

Canada announces roster for Iceland friendly

Canadian roster for international friendly

Canada’s men’s national team announced their roster today for their international friendly with Iceland. The Canucks will travel to Reykjavik this week for their first-ever meeting with Iceland on 22 August. Newly-appointed national coach Dale Mitchell has selected 17 players for this first trip with the senior team.

As this particular international friendly match is in Iceland, Canada will be taking a roster featuring European-based players. Ten of the 17 players recently represented Canada at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Paul Stalteri (59 senior caps) and Richard Hastings (43) are the most experienced players on the squad. Asmir Begovic and Nik Ledgerwood, both two-time members of past FIFA U-20 World Cup teams, are the least experienced players as each have yet to win their first senior cap.

Destination: China 2007

With only one month to go, anticipation for this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup China 2007 is quickly growing. Canada will play its opening Group C matches in two cities: two matches in Hangzhou at the Hangzhou Dragon Stadium and one match in Chengdu at Chengdu Sports Center Stadium.

Canada will start their trip in Hangzhou with matches on 12 September against Norge (Norway) and 15 September against Ghana. Hangzhou is the capital of the province Zhejiang and has a population of more than 6 million people. It is located in the Yangtze River Delta.
