Canadian Olympic teams compete on Friday

Canada’s two Olympic qualification teams play preparatory matches on Friday 7 March. Canada’s men’s U-23 team is preparing for next week’s CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualification Tournament (12-23 March in Carson, CA and Nashville, TN) while Canada’s women’s senior team is preparing for next month’s CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament (2-12 April in Ciudad Juarez, México).
The Canadian women play Asian champions Japan in the Cyprus Cup (15.00 local time in Cyprus) while the Canadian men play 2006 NCAA champions UC Santa Barbara (19.00 local time in Oxnard, CA).

Canada’s women’s national team will face their first of five March opponents on Wednesday as they kick-off their participation in the 2008 Cyprus Cup. Canada will face Russia in Paralimni, Cyprus (15.00 kickoff). It is Canada’s first match in Europe in 18 months.



“The training regime for the first four-to-five days here in Cyprus has been slightly lighter than normal,” says head coach Even Pellerud. “We are adjusting to a 33-hour travel ‘day’ and 10 hours of time difference. We have allowed more time to the individuals and an overall easier schedule.”

Ce mercredi, l’équipe nationale canadienne féminine senior affronte le premier des cinq adversaires auxquels elle fera face au mois de mars, en débutant sa participation dans le cadre de l’édition 2008 de la Coupe de Chypre. Le Canada se mesurera à la Russie à Paralimni. Il s’agit du premier match de la sélection canadienne en Europe depuis 18 mois.



Selon l’entraîneur-chef de l’équipe, Even Pellerud : « Au cours de ces quatre à cinq premiers jours ici à Chypre, le programme d’entraînement a été un peu plus léger que normalement. Il faut que nous nous adaptions aux 33 heures de voyage que nous venons d’effectuer, ainsi qu’aux dix heures de décalage horaire. C’est pourquoi nous avons accordé plus de temps individuel aux joueuses et leur offrons un programme qui est en général plus détendu. Les terrains d’entraînement sont de premier calibre, donc tout le monde est content et le personnel d’encadrement bénéficie de 24 joueuses qui sont toutes en pleine forme une ou deux fois par jour. L’hôtel est bon et son emplacement, sur le plage de Lanarca, ne pourrait pas être mieux. »

Association continues to move forward on strategic plan

The Canadian Soccer Association’s next general meetings will take place in two weeks from 14-16 March in Ottawa, ON. The weekend meetings include an Executive Committee meeting on Friday and the Board of Directors meeting on Saturday and Sunday. As part of the weekend agenda, the Association’s new strategic plan will again be discussed by executive members and board directors. After the last meetings in January, each of the provincial and territorial members set out to engage their local membership on the strategic plan. Key stakeholders from across the country were asked to submit their initial comments on the framework for the end of February. “The development of our new strategic plan has been a top priority for the Association as it will play a major role in our direction for the coming years,” says Canadian Soccer Association Chairman of the Board, Dr. Dominic Maestracci. “It is important to engage all of our membership in the process which has been a positive step for the soccer in Canada.”

Canada announces roster for women’s trip to Europe

Canada’s women’s national team announced the roster for their prepartory match schedule in Europe this month. The Canadian side will play five games over the next two weeks, three of which will be part of the Cyprus Cup.



The Canadian side arrived in Cyprus this week with a healthy group of 24 players. The Canadians will take part in the Cyprus Cup competition starting this coming Wednesday.

L’équipe nationale canadienne féminine senior vient de dévoiler le nom des joueuses qui participeront aux matchs de préparation en Europe durant le mois de mars. La sélection canadienne disputera cinq matchs au cours des deux prochaines semaines, dont trois dans le cadre de la Coupe de Chypre.



Le groupe des joueuses canadiennes est arrivé à Chypre cette semaine et Even Pellerud peut compter sur 24 joueuses en pleine forme. C’est à partir de mercredi prochain que les « Canucks » participeront à la Coupe de Chypre.

CONCACAF posts draw results for Olympic qualifiers

The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced today details for the upcoming Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament that will take place in Mexico in early April. Canada has been drawn into a preliminary group with Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago for the opening round of the tournament which runs 2-12 April at the Estadio Olímpico Benito Juarez in Ciudad Juarez. In the opening round, Canada will play Trinidad & Tobago on 2 April (17.00) and then Costa Rica on 6 April (11.00). Should Canada finish first or second in its group, it will play a cross-over semi-final on 9 April (17.00 or 19.30)against an opponent from the other group (United States, México or Jamaica). Should they win their semi-final, they will advance to the championship final on 12 April (19.30) and win a berth in this summer’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament (6-23 August in Beijing).

Le Canada se retrouve dans le groupe préliminaire aux côtés du Costa Rica et de la Trinité-et-Tobago pour la première phase du tournoi qui se déroulera du 2 au 12 avril à l’Estadio Olímpico Benito Juarez de Ciudad Juarez. Dans le cadre de la première phase, le Canada affrontera la Trinité-et-Tobago le 2 avril (17.00), avant de se mesurer le Costa Rica le 6 avril (11.00). Si le Canada termine en première ou en deuxième place de son groupe, il disputera la demi-finale le 9 avril (17.00 ou 19.30) face à un adversaire de l’autre groupe (les États-Unis, le Mexique ou la Jamaïque). Si le Canada remporte la demi-finale, il avancera à la finale du tournoi, qui aura lieu le 12 avril (17.00), et obtiendra son billet pour participer au Tournoi Olympique de Football Féminin, qui se déroulera du 6 au 23 août prochain à Beijing, en Chine.

Canada’s women’s national team announced today its preparatory match schedule for early March. The Canadian team will leave for Europe in late February and take part in four games in Cyprus (5-12 March), three of which will be part of the 2008 Cyprus Cup. Canada will then play France in the Meaux suburb of Paris on 14 March before returning to Canada.



“Following some six weeks of intensive training at our residency program in Vancouver, the team is very much looking forward to this exciting new tournament in Cyprus,” says coach Even Pellerud. “The timing for this international event could not have been better! The level of opposition is also a very good fit for us – with all teams ranked close to ourselves.”
