FIFA U-20 World Cup named Ottawa Tourism Event of the Year

The FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 has been named the Ottawa Tourism Event of the Year. The landmark event and its local (Ottawa) organising committee was recognised on Wednesday 2 April at the Ottawa Tourism Awards. The FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007, which was hosted in six cities across Canada, drew a tournament-record 1.2-million fans, was viewed by 469.5-million global television viewers, and generated $259-million in economic impact.



“This is an incredible honour for the Ottawa team responsible for the success of the event,” says Marci Morris, general manager for the Ottawa Local Organising Committee. “The partnership of the local soccer community with the City of Ottawa, Lansdowne Park, Ottawa Tourism, the local business community and TEAM Ottawa Gatineau ensured that by any standard – entertainment, community involvement, legacy, organisation, media exposure, economic impact and numbers of visitors – FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 went beyond huge. In the summer of 2007 in Ottawa, soccer OWNED the city.”

Canada enters 2008 Peace Queen Cup

Canada’s senior women’s team announced today that it will take part in the 2008 Peace Queen Cup. The tournament, which runs 14-21 June in Suwon, Republic of Korea, will feature eight teams including Canada. Canada, Republic of Korea, DPR Korea and Argentina have been drawn into Group A while the United States, Brasil, Italia and Australia have been drawn into Group B.



Canada will face Argentina on 14 June, hosts Republic of Korea on 16 June, and DPR Korea on 18 June. All Group A matches are played on those three dates at the Suwon World Cup Stadium. The Group B matches are played on 15-17-19 June at the Suwon Sports Complex.

Le Canada participera à l’édition 2008 de la Peace Queen Cup

L’équipe nationale canadienne féminine senior a annoncé, aujourd’hui, qu’elle participera à l’édition 2008 de la Peace Queen Cup. Le tournoi, qui se déroule du 14 au 21 juin à Suwon, en République de Corée, réunira huit équipes, y compris le Canada.



Le Canada, la République de Corée, la RDP Corée et l’Argentine (Argentina) se retrouvent tous dans le Groupe A, alors que les États-Unis (United States), le Brésil (Brasil), l’Italie (Italia) et l’Australie (Australia) formeront eux le Groupe B.

Canada opens qualifiers against Trinidad & Tobago

Canada’s women’s national team will face Trinidad & Tobago in the opening match of the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament on Wednesday 2 April. The two teams will kickoff at 17.00 local time (20.00 ET) at the Estadio Olímpico Benito Juarez in Ciudad Juarez, México.



All of Canada’s matches at the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament will be webcast on CBCSports.ca. Canada’s first two matches (2 April against Trinidad & Tobago and 6 April against Costa Rica) as well as the two semi-finals will be broadcast on GolTV. Tournament matches will also be televised by host broadcaster PCTV in México.

Canada announces roster for Juarez

Canada’s women’s national team announced its final roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament. The 20-player team left California today for Juarez, México, the site for the 2008 tournament.



“We are today finishing a very succesful precamp at Oxnard, California,” says head coach Even Pellerud. “The conditions on and off the field have been absolutely outstanding. The players have been very focused on the pitch, but still calm and relaxed. They have had quite some fun during these seven days of training and mental work.”

Selon l’entraîneur-chef de l’équipe nationale canadienne féminine senior, Even Pellerud : « Nous concluons aujourd’hui un camp d’entraînement très réussi à Oxnard, en Californie. Les conditions sur le terrain et en dehors de celui-ciaussi bien qu’en dehors ont été vraiment exceptionnelles. Sur le terrain de jeu, les joueuses se sont montrées très concentrées, mais en même temps calmes et détendues, et elles se sont quand même amusées un peu pendant ces sept jours d’entraînement et de travail mental intensif. »

Bahamas and Bermuda advance

The Bahamas slipped past the British Virgin Islands on Sunday to reach the second round of CONCACAF qualifying, where they will be joined by Bermuda who comfortably beat the Cayman Islands.



The Nature Boyz of BVI put up a brave fight on Sunday, but fell in the end to the Bahamas by the slimmest of margins. The 2:2 draw on the night saw the series finish 3-3 on aggregate, but the Bahamas won out by virtue of the away goals rule.

Estonia friendly report

Canada’s senior men’s side recently wrapped up their first European trip of the 2008 season. The Canucks played Estonia on Wednesday 26 March in Tallinn. The match was played on a snow-covered pitch at the A.Le Coq Arena. Canada lost 0:2 after an unlucky own goal and a last-minute strike by Estonia.



“International mid-week friendlies are largely about getting your players together for a couple of days and trying some things out in a match,” says head coach Dale Mitchell. “It is part of the process in preparing for FIFA World Cup Qualifying.”
