Canada has slipped to third place in its group in CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers. Canada fell after a 1:2 loss to Honduras at Stade Saputo in Montréal. Canada has one point after two matches.



Mexico remains at the top of the group, now leading with six points after two matches. On the same night of Canada’s loss, Mexico won 3:0 over Jamaica at Estadio Azteca. It took Andres Guardado all of two minutes to score the opening goal of the match. Fernando Enrique Ruiz Arce and Jose Jonny Oliva Magallon added goals for the win.

Canada holds top-10 position in world rankings

Canada is the 10th-ranked country in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Rankings. It is the seventh-consecutive ranking in which Canada has held a top-10 spot, dating back to the March 2007 ranking. Canada most recently reached the quarter-final stage at the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in China.



USA and Germany are still one-two at the head of the standings. USA recently won its third Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in four tries. USA won the gold medal after defeating Canada in the quarter-final, Japan in the semi-final, and Brazil in the final.

Canada makes final preparations for Honduras

The team practiced from 11.00 to 12.00 at Stade Saputo on the eve of the big game. Canada will kick off at 20.00 at Stade Saputo in Montréal, QC. “It’s important that we pick up points in every match,” says coach Dale Mitchell. “(This stage) is a mini league and all four teams will be judged at the end of six matches.”

Canada trains at Stade Saputo

Canada was in full gear this morning as it arrived at Stade Saputo for its daily training. The players were dressed for the team photo that was taken before the actual practice session. Canada is training this week in Montréal for a Saturday night match against Honduras. It will be the second of six group matches for both teams in what is CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers.

Canada continues preparations for Honduras

Canada had its full squad together today in Montréal at the Parc Gabrielle-Lalemand. Coach Dale Mitchell and his staff put the players through a two-hour training session, most notably a red versus yellow inter-squad exhibition. Canada is currently preparing for this Saturday’s FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers match against Honduras at Stade Saputo. “The only thing we have in our minds is a win,” says Julian de Guzman. “We’re not going to this game in a panic mode. No one should panic at the moment. We have a whole week to prepare for this.”

Canada is the sixth-ranked country in CONCACAF in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. Canada stuck to 412 points in the September 2008 ranking, the same total it had one month ago. Mexico (807) and USA (788), meanwhile, are still the top-two ranked countries in the confederation.



The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year.

Players looking forward to Saturday’s home crowd

Canada had another day of training under the Montréal sun as the team continues its preparations for Saturday’s FIFA World Cup Qualifiers match against Honduras. The 6 September match kicks off at 20.00 ET at Stade Saputo.



“It will be a real tough game come Saturday,” said captain Paul Stalteri. “Honduras is playing as good as anyone in the region right now. Saturday is a big one for us.”
