Canada moves up to fifth in CONCACAF rankings

Canada is the fifth-ranked country in CONCACAF in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. Canada moved up one spot within the CONCACAF rankings while its points total move up from 412 to 415. Canada jumped ahead of Trinidad & Tobago in the standings, who fell from 414 to 404 points in the October 2008 ranking.



The four CONCACAF teams ahead of Canada all had big jumps. The United States (861, up 73 points), Mexico (841, up 38 points), Honduras (601, up 99 points) and Costa Rica (476, up 38) all posted two victories in FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers in September. Of note, the United States slipped ahead of Mexico within the CONCACAF rankings. The United States (21) and Mexico (24) are both ranked amongst the top-25 nations in the world rankings.

Canada begins camp en route to Honduras

Canada has arrived in Sunrise, FL to begin training for this weekend’s FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers match in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Canada had a dozen players on the first day of camp as the team trained for two hours under coach Dale Mitchell and his staff. More players will arrive in the next few days before all 18 players and staff depart for Honduras on Thursday.



Canada will then have one day of training in Honduras before playing on Saturday 11 October. The match will be televised live on Sportsnet Pacific (18.30 PT) and Sportsnet West (19.30 MT). The Saturday match will be Canada’s fourth of six matches in CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers.

Canada announces roster for next two FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers

Canada has announced its roster for its upcoming FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers in San Pedro Sula, Honduras and Edmonton, AB. The team will group early next week in Sunrise, FL before heading south to Honduras. Canada plays Honduras on the road on 11 October and Mexica at home on 15 October. Canada is currently taking part in CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers. After three matches, Canada is in third place in Group 2 with one point, trailing Honduras (six points) and Mexico (nine points). Canada needs a big win against Honduras to gain ground in the standings. Only the top-two teams will advance after six matches.

Association begins search for new women’s head coach

The Canadian Soccer Association officially launches its search for a new women’s head coach this week. The deadline for applications is 15 October 2008. The new head coach will be responsible for the overall management and direction of the women’s national-team program. Responsibilities include the preparation and selection of the women’s national team. The head coach will also develop and document all aspects of the women’s national team, including technical leadership, high-performance training and planning, sports science requirements, and evaluation and analysis of results and benchmarks. Qualifications include Canadian Coaching “A” Licence (or equivalent) and international coaching experience.

La date limite pour le dépôt des candidatures est le 15 octobre 2008. La personne retenue pour le poste de nouvel(le) entraîneur(e)-chef sera responsable de la gestion et de la direction globales du programme de l’équipe nationale féminine. Parmi ses responsabilités, citons la préparation de l’équipe nationale canadienne féminine senior et la sélection des joueuses qui en feront partie. L’entraîneur(e)-chef aura pour tâche de perfectionner et de documenter l’ensemble des aspects liés au fonctionnement de l’équipe nationale canadienne féminine senior, y compris le leadership technique, l’entraînement de haut niveau et sa planification, les exigences en matière de sciences du sport, ainsi que l’évaluation et l’analyse des résultats et repères. Le candidat ou la candidate retenu(e) devra détenir une licence « A » d’entraîneur canadien (ou son équivalence) et avoir de l’expérience en entraînement au niveau international.

Canada has a tough battle ahead as it remains in third place with one point in its CONCACAF group after three matches. Canada will likely need three-straight wins, if not a pair of wins and some bad luck to Honduras, if it wishes to advance beyond CONCACAF Stage III in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Qualifiers.



Canada came on late, but was unable to score an equaliser en route to a 1:2 loss to Mexico this evening. Canada has one point (0-1-2) while Mexico has 9 points (3-0-0) and Honduras has six points (2-0-1).

Could history be just a short 24 hours away? Canada is looking for a Wednesday win on Mexican soil, something it has never done in 50 years of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Such a win would give Canada three more points, something the team desperately needs on its road to South Africa 2010.



It will be match day three this 10 September for Canada and Mexico in CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Qualifiers. The match kicks off at 20.00 (21.00 ET / 18.00 ET) at the Estadio Victor Manuel Reyna in Tuxtla Gutierrez. The match will be broadcast live in Canada on all four Sportsnet channels.

Canada begins training in Mexico

Canada had its first day of training in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico today. The team trained for nearly two hours at the practice field adjacent to the Estadio. The team has two days before its 10 September match against Mexico at that very stadium.



It will be match three of six for Canada in CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Qualifiers. Canada needs points after posting a draw (1:1 on 27 August against Jamaica) and a loss (1:2 on 6 September against Honduras) in its first two matches. Canada is in third place in its four-team group, but only the top-two teams will advance after the six-game set is through.

Canada heads south for Mexico

Canada is off to Mexico in search of points in CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers. The team left Montréal airport Sunday morning, touching down briefly in Houston before making the final leg to Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico.



Canada faces Mexico this Wednesday 10 September at the Estadio Víctor Manuel Reyna in the group’s match day three of six. Mexico (2-0-0) is in first place with six points while Canada (0-1-1) is in third place with one point. Honduras (1-0-1, 4 points), meanwhile, hosts Jamaica (0-1-1, one point) in the other group match this Wednesday.
