Canada meets eve of season finale

Canada’s men’s national team had its final day of training for the 2008 season tonight at the National Soccer Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. The one-hour training session was planned in advance of Wednesday’s 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers match against Jamaica. The 19 November match (20.00 kickoff) will mark the end of the 2008 season.



Wednesday will be the sixth and final day in CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers. Regardless of the Wednesday outcome, Canada will finish fourth in the so-called “Group of Death” and will not advance to the final round.

PEI announces annual award winners

The Prince Edward Island Soccer Association announced its award winners at its annual awards banquet. Paul Craig and Kristina Weatherbie were the big winners as the male and female Senior Players of the Year.



Other award winners were Junior Players of the Year Davor Alisic and Katie O’Brien, Coach of the Year John Diamond, Senior Referee of the Year Enes Alisic, Junior Referee of the Year Cory Deagle, Administrator of the Year Bruce Matheson, Volunteer of the Year John Gallant, and Team of the Year Avondale Islanders.

Canada arrives in Jamaica

Canada’s men’s national team has arrived in Kingston, Jamaica and has begun its final preparations for its 19 November FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers match. The Wednesday-night match will be the sixth and last in CONCACAF Stage III from which Canada will not advance.



Jamaica still has a chance to advance with a win and some luck in the Mexico-Honduras match (to be played simultaneously). Canada, on the other hand, will be looking to close out its 2008 campaign with a win. Canada has called up a group of young players that has been mixed in with the veterans.

Soccer NB annual award winners

Soccer New Brunswick has announced its annual award winners. The two big winners were 2008 Players of the Year Galen Smith and Renelle Savoie.



Other award winners were Volunteer of the Year Danny Gallan, Manager of the Year Kim Boucher, Coach of the Year Mark Meihuizen, Referee of the Year Rolland Belliveau, and Teams of the Year (co-winners) Fundy U18 Girls and FC Chaleur U14 Girls.

Canada announces roster for Jamaica match

Canada’s men’s national team has announced its roster for next week’s FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers match in Kingston, Jamaica. Coach Dale Mitchell has called 18 players for match-day six of CONCACAF Stage III in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers. The Canada-Jamaica match will be played at the National Stadium on Wednesday 19 November. Canada is facing Jamaica in FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers for the sixth time. In five matches (including a recent 1:1 draw on 20 August 2008), Canada has one win, three draws and one loss. Canada’s all-time record against Jamaica is six wins, five draws and two losses.

Canada ranks seventh in CONCACAF

Canada did not move up within CONCACAF, but its point total did climb from 415 to 434 points. USA (834 points) and Mexico (827) remain the top-two ranked countries in CONCACAF.

Referee Pye continues at New Zealand 2008

Canada’s Michelle Pye is one of five FIFA referees selected to remain in New Zealand for the closing stages of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Those stages feature the two semi-final matches in Christchurch on 13 November and both the final and match for third place in Auckland on 16 November.



Pye has been appointed to officiate the 13 November semi-final between England and Korea DPR. The match kicks off at 16.00 local time. The other semi-final match features USA and Germany.

Neil honoured for contributions to women in sport

Andrea Neil was honoured today at the annual In Her Footsteps…Celebrating BC Women in Sport reception. The recognition program and exhibit, which is housed at the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Vancouver, now honours 40 women, including 2008 honourees Tricia Smith (rowing) and Roberta Ann Steen (coach, volunteer, administrator).



Andrea Neil was a long-time member of Canada’s national team, representing her country at four FIFA Women’s World Cups. She retired in 2007 as the country’s all-time leader in appearances (132). She also enjoyed a long career with the Vancouver Breakers/Whitecaps and won W-League championships in 2004 and 2006.

Sinclair shortlisted again for FIFA World Player of the Year

Who will be honoured with the title of FIFA World Player and FIFA Women’s World Player for 2008? FIFA has today announced the names of the nominees (see below) and the final decision will be made by the captains and head coaches of the men’s and women’s national teams.



At the beginning of December, FIFA will announce the names of the three men and women who have received the most votes and the winners will be revealed at the 18th FIFA World Player Gala at the Zurich Opera House on 12 January 2009.
