Association adds new staff members

The Canadian Soccer Association is pleased to announce the hiring of two new staff members to its offices. Ms. Sandra Gage has been hired to the position of Director, Business Development while Ms. Sylvie Béliveau to the position of Long-Term Player Development Manager.
Ms. Gage is a marketing and communications specialist with over seventeen years experience in the Canadian sport system. Her previous positions include Director, Marketing and Communications for Coaching Association of Canada, Executive Director of Partnership Development with Esteem Team Association, and Director, Corporate Partnerships with Skate Canada. In her new role with the Canadian Soccer Association, she will be responsible for the overall direction of marketing, sponsorship and communications activities within the organization.

Nova Scotia Soccer League announces award winners

Halifax Dunbrack’s Derek Gaudet and Leanne Huck have been named their respective league’s most valuable players. The duo were recognized at the conclusion of the 2009 Nova Scotia Soccer League, which wrapped up its playoff schedule on 25 August. Gaudet was recognized as a league All-Star and men’s division Most Valuable Player while Huck was recognized as a league All-Star, Golden Boot winner, and Most Valuable Player.



Gaudet’s Halifax Dunbrack fell to Halifax City in the men’s provincial final and will not advance to the BMO National Championships Challenge Trophy competition. Huck’s Halifax Dunbrack, meanwhile, won the women’s provincial title and has qualified for the BMO National Championships Jubilee Trophy competition.

Canada makes jump in FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings

Canada’s men’s national team made the biggest jump in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings, gaining 138 points and 26 spots after the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada now ranks fifth amongst CONCACAF nations and 66th amongst all nations.



The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year.

Klukowski and de Guzman named to All-Tournament Team

Canada’s Julian de Guzman and Mike Klukowski have both been named to the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup All-Tournament Team. Klukowski was selected as one of six defenders while de Guzman was selected as one of six midfielders. In all, 18 players from the 12-team competition were selected to the All-Tournament Team.



The 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup concluded today after 25 matches from 3-26 July in 13 cities across USA. Mexico won the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup after a 5:0 victory over USA in the final.

Canada concludes friendly series with USA

Canada’s women’s national team saved its best for last, but was unable to overcome long-time rival USA in the third and final friendly between the two sides in 2009. Canada suffered its third loss to the world’s number-one ranked country, this time falling 0:1 on a last-minute goal to USA youngster Christine Nairn.

Sinclair one match away from Canadian milestone

Canada’s women’s national team captain Christine Sinclair is closing in on a number of career and Canadian milestones. Should Sinclair appear in the Canada-USA match Wednesday evening in Charleston, SC she will tie Andrea Neil for first in all-time matches played for Canada. Sinclair currently sits on 131 career appearances, one behind Neil who is now an assistant coach with the women’s national team. Sinclair passed Charmaine Hooper (130) for second place on Sunday, making her 131st appearance on 19 July in Rochester.

Canada-USA goes out coast-to-coast on Sportsnet

Canada’s women’s national team will close out its three-game series with USA this Wednesday evening in Charleston, SC. Fans from coast-to-coast can catch the Canada-USA match on Rogers Sportsnet. The match kicks off at 20.00 ET / 17.00 PT and will be broadcast live on all four Sportsnet channels.
