Canada held onto first place in Group A with a big 3:0 win over host Mexico. Canada finished first with a perfect nine points, winning all three of its matches at the Estadio Beto Ávila in Cancún, Mexico. With the group stage complete, Canada advances to the semi-final stage to face Costa Rica on 5 November.


WNT: Gayle makes birthday appearance

By having all 20 of her players see action in the first two matches, head coach Carolina Morace added to a subtle stat in Canadian women’s team history: players who have made an appearance on their birthday. In Canada’s big 8:0 victory over Guyana on Sunday 31 October, right back Robyn Gayle celebrated her 25th birthday by coming on as a second-half substitution for starter Rhian Wilkinson.

Canada to face Mexico with first place on the line

With first place on the line, Canada will face Mexico in the final group match of the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifier this Tuesday 2 November. The two sides will meet at the Estadio Beto Ávila in Cancún, Mexico. Both sides have already qualified for the semi-final stage, but their ranking will determine who they meet from the opposite group in the semi-final match. The Tuesday night winner will face Costa Rica while the second-place team will face USA.

Christine Sinclair remembers her first season in organised soccer. She was four years old playing for the South Burnaby Metro Club Bees. Her Burnaby team finished last after scoring one goal and losing every match. Yup, that was a big “0” in the win column.

It has been 36 years since Canada last played on Hallowe’en – an international friendly match as part of an Eastern European tour for Canada’s men’s national team. This year, Canada’s national teams have two matches on Hallowe’en 2010: the men’s U-17 team in Montego Bay, Jamaica and the women’s national team in Cancún, Mexico. Actually, it has been a busy two weeks for all of Canada’s national teams. There have been 14 matches in 14 days from 18 October to 31 October.

Canada qualified for the semi-final stage of the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s World Cup Qualifier with an 8:0 victory over Guyana on Sunday 31 October. Canada has six points (nine goals scored, none conceded) after two matches, with its second-straight victory on Sunday night at the Estadio Beto Ávila in Cancún, Mexico. Canada is in first place in its group ahead of Mexico, who won 2:0 over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday (Mexico has six points, nine goals scored, two goals conceded).
