Men’s National Team nominees for the 2023 Canada Soccer Player Awards

Canada Soccer have launched voting for the 2023 Canada Soccer Players Awards to honour the top footballers from the year at both the club and international levels. Canadian media and coaches will vote for the Canada Soccer Players of the Year Award while fans will vote for the Allstate Canada Soccer National Teams Good Hands Award as well as the Men’s National Team and Women’s National Team Moments of the Year.

The co-winners for this year’s Canada Soccer Players of the Year Award will feature one player from the Men’s National Team and one player from the Women’s National Team. Nominees from the Men’s National Team Program are Tajon Buchanan, Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies, Stephen Eustáquio, Alistair Johnston, Ismaël Koné, Cyle Larin, Richie Laryea and Kamal Miller. Nominees from the Women’s National Team Program are Kadeisha Buchanan, Jessie Fleming, Vanessa Gilles, Cloé Lacasse, Ashley Lawrence, Adriana Leon, Nichelle Prince, Jade Rose and Kailen Sheridan.

This year marks the 31st year for the Canada Soccer Player Awards, but also the first since record holders Christine Sinclair and Atiba Hutchinson have left international football after more than two decades with the Women’s and Men’s National Teams. Sinclair is the all-time leader with 14 Player of the Year awards while Hutchinson is the Men’s National Team leader with six Player of the Year awards.

Media and coaches will vote for the Canada Soccer Players of the Year Award from Thursday 7 December to Tuesday 12 December with the two winners to be announced on 14 and 15 December.

TAJON BUCHANAN
Tajon Buchanan made six appearances for Canada including a second-place finish in the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals. He was part of the build up on two Canada goals in a 4:1 win over Honduras in March. He notably reached the Round of 16 in 2022-23 UEFA Champions League.

JONATHAN DAVID
Jonathan David scored four goals and two assists in seven Canada matches in 2023 including a second-place finish at the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals. He earned Performance of the Match honours in the Semifinals against Panama. At the club level from January through November 2023 with Lille OSC, he made 42 appearances, played 3,412 minutes, scored 21 goals and got two assists. He featured in 2023-24 UEFA Europa Conference League.

ALPHONSO DAVIES
Alphonso Davies scored two goals and one assist in seven Canada matches in 2023, including a second-place finish at the 202-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals. He scored in the Semifinals win over Panama. At the club level from January through November 2023 with FC Bayern München, he made 38 appearances, played 2,859 minutes, scored two goals and got seven assists. He helped FC Bayern win the 2022-23 Bundesliga and reach the Quarterfinals in 2022-23 UEFA Champions League.

STEPHEN EUSTÁQUIO
Stephen Eustáquio scored a goal and an assist in six Canada matches in 2023, including a second-place finish at the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals. He scored the match winner in Canada’s first away win in Jamaica in 35 years in November. At the club level from January through November 2023 with FC Porto, he made 41 appearances, played 2,732 minutes, scored five goals and got two assists. He helped FC Porto finish second in the 2022-23 Primeira Liga and reach the Round of 16 in 2022-23 UEFA Champions League.

ALISTAIR JOHNSTON
Alistair Johnston featured in six Canada matches include a second-place finish at the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals. He was part of the build up on Canada’s last goal against Honduras to qualify for the Concacaf Nations League Finals. At the club level from January through November 2023 with Celtic FC, he made 35 appearances, played 2,969 minutes, scored one goal and got two assists. He helped Celtic win the 2022-23 Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup. He also featured in 2023-24 UEFA Champions League.

ISMAËL KONÉ
Ismaël Koné featured in six Canada matches including a second-place finish at the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals. He scored his first home goal in November against Jamaica. At the club level from January through November 2023 with Watford FC, he made 33 appearances, played 1,984 minutes, scored one goal and got two assists.

CYLE LARIN
Cyle Larin scored three goals and one assist in seven Canada matches in 2023, including a second-place finish at the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals. He scored two goals and earned Performance of the Match honours when Canada qualified for the Concacaf Nations League Finals. At the club level from January through November 2023 in Spain with Real Valladolid CF and then RCD Mallorca, he made 33 appearances, played 2,039 minutes, scored nine goals and got four assists.

RICHIE LARYEA
Richie Laryea featured in all 11 Canada matches in 2023 including a second-place finish at the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals. He led Canada with three assists and 957 minutes played while also earning Performance of the Match honours twice. At the club level from January through November 2023 in Canada with Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, he made 33 appearances, played 2,801 minutes, scored three goals and got eight assists. He helped the Whitecaps reach the MLS playoffs.

KAMAL MILLER
Kamal Miller made nine Canada appearances in 2023 including a second-place finish at the 2022-23 Concacaf Nations League Finals. He ranked second on Canada with 840 minutes played and earned an assist on the match winner that qualified Canada for the Concacaf Nations League Final. At the club level from January through November 2023 with CF Montréal and Inter Miami CF, he made 41 appearances and played 3,533 minutes. He featured in Concacaf Champions League with Montréal and won the Leagues Cup with Miami.
