Male nominees for Canadian Players of the Year award

The Canadian Soccer Association announced today the list of nominees for its 2010 player awards. Canadian media and coaches will be asked to select two players – one male and one female – for the Canadian Soccer Association’s top prize, the Canadian Players of the Year award. The award will celebrate Canada’s top-two soccer players in recognition of their 2010 achievements with both the national team and their respective club teams.

Nana Attakora – CAN / Toronto FC – North York, ON Nana joined the national team in 2010, making his debut on 31 January in a Men’s International Friendly match against Jamaica. The 21-year old defender took part in two camps with coach Stephen Hart. At the club level, he played for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer. He also helped Toronto FC win the 2010 Nutrilite Canadian Championship and scored a goal in the group phase of 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League.





Adrian Cann – CAN / Toronto FC – Thornhill, ON Adrian took part in his third season with the national team, making one appearance on 31 January 2010 against Jamaica. He took part in one camp with the team, spending the bulk of the year with his club Toronto FC where he won Toronto FC Most Valuable Player honours. Cann helped Toronto FC win the 2010 Nutrilite Canadian Championship and helped the club reach the group phase of CONCACAF Champions League.





Dwayne De Rosario – CAN / Toronto FC – Scarborough, ON Dwayne rejoined the national team in 2010, taking part in three camps including a memorable trip to Buenos Aires to face the two-time FIFA World Cup™ champions Argentina in May. At the club level, he was named to the MLS Best XI while winning Toronto FC’s Golden Boot award with 15 goals. He helped Toronto FC win its second Nutrilite Canadian Championship, also winning his second George Gross Award as tournament MVP.





Atiba Hutchinson – NED / PSV Eindhoven – Brampton, ON Atiba celebrated his eighth season with the national team in 2010 by scoring a goal in his 50th career appearance, a 2:2 draw with Ukraine on 8 October. At the club level, he split the year between F.C. København in Denmark and PSV Eindhoven in Netherlands. He won the Dansk Fodbold Award as the top player in the Danish Superleague. With PSV Eindhoven, he has kept the club in first club through late November.





Simeon Jackson – ENG / Norwich City FC – Mississauga, ON Simeon took part in his second season with the national team in 2010, scoring a goal in the 2:2 draw with Ukraine on 8 October in Kyiv. Simeon was in fact one of three players to make five appearances for Canada this year. At the club level, Simeon switched from Gillingham FC to Norwich City FC. Since joining Norwich City, he has scored four goals in eight league appearances.





Will Johnson – USA / Real Salt Lake – Toronto, ON Will took part in his sixth season with the national team in 2010, making three appearances including the memorable 24 May match against Argentina and the 2:1 victory over Honduras at home on 7 September. At the club level, Will played for Real Salt Lake of MLS, helping the reigning champions reach the playoffs. In CONCACAF Champions League, will helped Real Salt Lake advance beyond the group phase.





Josh Simpson – TUR / TUR / Vestel Manisaspor – Victoria, BC Josh took part in his seventh season with the national team in 2010, making four appearances and scoring a goal in the home Men’s International Friendly on 7 September against Honduras. He was the Man of the Match in that 2:1 victory at Stade Saputo in Montréal. At the club level, Josh scored often for his team Vestel Manisaspor in Turkey, including a hat trick performance in league play in September.





Adam Straith – GER / FC Energie Cottbus – Victoria, BC Adam joined the national team in 2010, making his debut on 24 May as a substitute in the Men’s International Friendly match against Argentina. He was one of three players to make five appearances in 2010 and he won Man of the Match honours on 4 September in Toronto. He was the youngest of 47 players to play for Canada in 2010. At the club level, he played for FC Energie Cottbus in the German Bundesliga 2.
