Canada To Play Scotland In Friendly

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association today announced its Men’s World Cup Team will play Scotland in a full international friendly on October 15, 2002 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The game will be played at Easter Road Stadium (home of Scottish Premier League side Hibernian) at 8:00 p.m. local time.



The game will mark the first time the two countries have faced each other at the senior national level since Scotland defeated Canada 3-1 at Varsity Stadium in Toronto on May 20, 1992. John Catliff scored Canada’s only goal in the game. The two countries first met in 1888 (4-0 Scotland win) and have played each other five times (including a three-game series across Canada in June 1983) with Scotland winning all five games.



Scotland will play Denmark in a friendly on August 21st in Glasgow before beginning their 2004 European Championship Qualifying with a game against the Faroe Islands on September 8. They will play in Iceland on October 12 prior to the friendly against Canada. Scotland is in Group 5 in European Qualifying with Germany, Lithuania, the Faroe Islands and Iceland.
