Canada to face Honduras

Canada’s men’s national team learned tonight of its opponent for next week’s CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-final stage. Canada will face Honduras in the first of four quarter-final matches this 18-19 July. Canada’s quarter-final match will be played at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA.



Honduras qualified for the quarter-final stage tonight on the final day of Group B action. USA finished first after it pulled off a 2:2 draw with Haiti. USA scored in the 92nd minute to earn the single point. Honduras, meanwhile, won its match 4:0 over Grenada.

Haiti would have likely finished second in the group had it won the match. With four points after three matches, however, Haiti still qualified for the quarter-final stage. The final group matches (Group C) will be played on Sunday 12 July.



Canada has faced Honduras 17 times with a record of five wins, four draws and eight losses. Last year, Canada lost two matches to Honduras in FIFA World Cup™ Qualifiers. Canada’s campaign turned for the worse in Montréal after Tomasz Radzinski was pushed into the boards (he left the game with an injury) and the opponent reversed a 1-0 Canadian lead into a 2:1 Honduras victory.



So far this year, Canada is unbeaten in five matches. Canada won friendly matches on 30 May and 30 June before posting two wins and a draw in the group phase of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Canada qualified for the quarter-final stage after finishing first in its group.
