It is important for the national team to get accustomed to playing games at home and in front of Canadian support, in order to prepare ourselves for World Cup qualifying in 2008, says Canadian head coach Dale Mitchell. Costa Rica has been a regular participant in recent World Cups and will provide our team with a real test.
Canada last faced Costa Rica during the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Canadian team pulled off a 2:1 win over Costa Rica in the opening match of the group stage. Tournament MVP Julian de Guzman scored both Canadian goals in the come-from-behind victory.
The Costa Rica game will be Dale Mitchell’s first match on Canadian soil as the men’s national team head coach. It will also be Canada’s first senior men’s match in Toronto since 2000.
