The Canadian Soccer Association heads to St. John’s, NL this weekend for the 2008 Annual General Meeting on 3 May. At the top of the agenda is the election of new officers, specifically the president (four-year term), one vice-president, one director-at-large, and the director professional.
The full weekend includes an Executive meeting on Thursday, a Board of Directors meeting on Friday, and the General Meeting on Saturday morning. The General Meeting will be followed by a press conference (online webcast available to the general public) and evening banquet. The Association’s annual award winners will be celebrated at the evening banquet.

The Association is expected to adopt a new strategic plan, enact more changes to its governance and by-laws, and review the long-term player development plan. The Association is also expected to approve and publish the 2007 audited financials as well as the complete 2004-2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 audited financials.
After the Saturday morning Annual General Meeting, the Association will unveil its new president at a press conference (13.00 local time). The conference will also feature comments from the general secretary Peter Montopoli, the men’s national team head coach Dale Mitchell, and the Newfoundland Labrador Soccer Association president Doug Redmond. The webcast will be available on-demand through CanadaSoccer.com on Saturday afternoon (details to be published later this week).
Critical to the new president’s role will be leadership on the road to the Association’s 100th anniversary in 2012. Major football events over the next four years include the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament (Canada has qualified for the first time ever), the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa (Canada begins qualifications this June), and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011.
Also on Saturday, the Association will recognise the 2008 recipients of the Canadian Soccer Association’s President’s Award (outstanding and unique efforts for an extended period of time), the Award of Merit (significant contribution to soccer), the Ray Morgan Memorial Award (referee progress at national and international levels) and the International Achievement Award (five-consecutive years on FIFA List of Referees and Assistant Referees).
St. John’s, NL is the home of the 2008 BMO national senior-club championships. Both the Hyundai Cup (Challenge Trophy) and Jubilee Trophy will be on display this weekend.
