The legacy continues to grow. Nine months after the close of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007, another award has been bestowed upon the largest single-sport event ever held in Canada. Today, it was the Canadian Sports Tourism Alliance and its second-annual CSTA PRESTIGE Awards. The FIFA U-20 World Cup was selected as the CSTA Sport Event of the Year (budget over $250,000).

“The FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 has provided a terrific springboard from which our sport can grow by leaps and bounds in the coming years,” says Peter Montopoli, Canadian Soccer Association General Secretary and former National Event Director for the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007.

The FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 ran from 30 June to 22 July last year in six cities: Victoria, Burnaby, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal. The event drew a tournament-record 1.2-million fans, was viewed by 469.5-million global television viewers, and generated $259-million in economic impact.

The PRESTIGE Awards were presented on 28 April at the Hilton Lac Leamy in Gatineau, QC in conjunction with the Sports Events Congress 2008. PRESTIGE stands for “Program Recognising Exceptional Sport Tourism Initiatives, Games & Events”. The awards are judged by a panel of sports industry and sport tourism professionals from across the country. The awards recognise the efforts and achievements of individuals, organizations and events in sport tourism in Canada.
