Posted on 16 April 2016 in National Championships

The journey to Canada Soccer's 2016 Sport Chek National Championships is underway with the senior matches played in the province of Québec this 16-17 April. Québec kicks off a five-month qualification road that leads to the 5 October opening matches in St. John's, Newfoudland Labrador.

More than 100 men's teams and 50 women's teams are registered for the two senior competitions, the Challenge Trophy and Jubilee Trophy. Every province and territority schedules their own qualification route to declare a representative at the Sport Chek National Championships.

The first match in the Québec senior league's 2016 season featured FS Salaberry v Arsenal Chambly, kicking off at 16.00 local on Saturday 16 April. The LSEQ runs a four-month regular season before the playoffs determine the Challenge Trophy representative on 18 September.

Québec will be the last province to wrap up their qualification road, with both the men's and women's winners declared less than three weeks before the 5 October opener in St. John's.

This year's Challenge Trophy men's competition will feature 12 teams while the Jubilee Trophy women's competition will feature 10 teams. From more than 150 teams, the two Canadian winners will be crowned on 10 October 2016.

The Sport Chek National Championships are Canada's premier amateur soccer competitions, This year marks the 94th edition of the senior men's competition and 35th edition of the senior women's competition. While the competition has sometimes featured professional or semi-professional teams, since the early 1960s the Sport Chek National Championships have strictly featured amateur teams. Since 2008, the Sport Chek National Championships have been complemented by the Amway Canadian Championship featuring professional clubs.
