Women’s nominees for the 2017 Canada Soccer Player Awards

Canada Soccer announced the list of nominees for the 2017 Canada Soccer Player Awards, with voting open for both media and coaches from 28 November through 7 December. The list of 12 nominees from Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team features several familiar names as well as first-time nominees Rebecca Quinn and Deanne Rose.

Janine Beckie scored two goals and one assist in 19 matches for Houston Dash in her sophomore campaign. She was Canada’s leading goalscorer for the second year in a row, this time scoring eight goals in 12 international matches including a hat trick in June at BMO Field in Toronto.

Kadeisha Buchanan won a trio of titles in her first season with FCF Olympique Lyonnais, lift the French Championship league title, the Coupe de France, and the continental UEFA Women’s Champions League. She played nine games at the international level, seven of which were wins for Canada.

Jessie Fleming helped UCLA reach the Final Four in the 2017 NCAA competition, with the last weekend of matches to be played in early December. At the international level, she scored a goal and an assist in 12 matches. She earned Player of the Match honours at BC Place in November.

Stephanie Labbé made 17 appearances for the Washington Spirit during the 2017 NWSL season. At the international level, she made 10 appearances for Canada, posting three clean sheets including one at BMO Field in Toronto in June. 

Ashley Lawrence helped Paris St-Germain reach the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League final, only falling on kicks to winners FCF Olympique Lyonnais. At the international level, she made 10 appearances for Canada and earned Player of the Match honours in a 0:0 draw with Portugal.

Adriana Leon scored six goals and six assists in 2017 for the Boston Breakers, also earning Player of the Week honours in September. At the international level, she scored three goals in six matches, including a game-tying goal against USA at BC Place in November.

Rebecca Quinn helped Duke University reach the Final Four in the 2017 NCAA competition, with the last weekend of matches to be played in early December. At the international level, she made eight appearances for Canada and was involved in the play that led to Adriana Leon’s tying goal at BC Place in November.

Deanne Rose helped the University of Florida reach the elite eight in the 2017 NCAA competition, also winning the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year honours. At the international level, she scored three goals and two assists in 11 matches, including goals at BC Place in February and BMO Field in June.

Sophie Schmidt helped FFC Frankfurst finish fifth in the Bundesliga table in 2016-17 and improve to fourth through the first three months of 2017-18. At the international level, she scored one goal in seven matches and earned Player of the Match honours in a 1:0 win over Sweden.

Desiree Scott played a career-high 21 matches for FC Kansas City during the 2017 NWSL season as the club finished seventh in the standings. At the international level, she was one of four Canadians that played in all 12 matches, including her Player of the Match honours against Germany.

Christine Sinclair scored eight goals in 24 regular-season matches before captaining Portland Thorns FC to their second NWSL Cup title in the playoffs. At the international level, she scored four goals in 12 matches for Canada while leading the team in assists (six) for the third year in a row.

Shelina Zadorsky played 21 matches for the Washington Spirit during the 2017 NWSL season. At the international level, she was Canada’s leader with 1,080 minutes played over 12 matches, including Player of the Match honours in a 2:1 win over Russia in March.
