2018 Teck Community Soccer Initiative Recipients Announced

Posted on 26 September 2018 in Sponsors & Partnerships

Teck & Canada Soccer have announced the recipients of the 2018 Teck Community Initiative program, an initiative that provides soccer associations in communities where Teck operates with an opportunity to receive a $2500 grant to enhance soccer programming and ultimately encourage local youth to be active. In total, four soccer associations in Teck communities receive grants each year through the program.

The program, now in its fifth year, is administered by Canada Soccer. Teck has been a proud partner of the Canada Soccer Association since 2005.

In 2018, the following soccer association will receive a $2500 grant:

Merritt Youth Soccer Association (Merritt, B.C.)
In Merritt, the funds will be used to purchase new equipment and to go towards field repairs necessary for providing a quality training and playing experience for the club’s members. The funds will also offset other costs which can be reinvested in coach and referee development.

Fernie Youth Soccer Association (Fernie, B.C.)
The Fernie Youth Soccer Association will use the grant funding to expand and develop their referee program with the goal of expanding the number of home officials. Being able to draw upon local officials will not only develop local talent but will also enable financial savings and improve scheduling.

Fort McMurray Youth Soccer Association (Fort McMurray, Alberta)
Purchasing quality equipment, training aids, and basic gear necessary for a safe and effective training and competitive environment is a necessity for the club and its families as they continue to rebuild their club and community following the devastating 2016 fire in the city.

Sparwood Minor Soccer Association (Sparwood, B.C.)
The Sparwood Minor Soccer Association will be using the grant to increase their ability to operate independently by building their own equipment storage facility. This infrastructure investment will support the continued growth of the soccer association.
