Canada Para Soccer to hold five-day camp in Ottawa

Canada’s Para Soccer team will hold its next national camp in the nation’s capital from 2 to 6 May 2012. The five-day camp will be hosted at Algonquin College under the leadership of Canadian Para Soccer head coach Drew Ferguson. Fifteen players have been selected for the camp.
This marks Canada’s second Para Soccer project of the year, following up on a successful camp in March in Las Vegas. The May camp in Ottawa will be followed by the International 7-a-side Tournament in Barcelona, Spain from 1-12 June.
“This will be the last time I see these players before I make my selection for the tournament in Spain, so I am hoping and expecting an intense camp,” said Ferguson. “We will not only be looking at some of our senior players, but also six development players.”
All 15 players called into camp have previous experience with the national Para Soccer program. Eight of the 15 players have experience at the biennial CP-ISRA World Championships, including captain Dustin Hodgson who has participated in each of the last four championships (2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011). Three players were part of Canada’s bronze medal team at the Parapanamerican Games Rio 2007 (Hodgson, John Phillips and Matt Brown).
Canada’s Para Soccer team features players who have cerebral palsy or have had a stroke or brain injury. Athletes that are interested in Canada’s Para Soccer team may contact head coach Ferguson at dferguson@soccercan.ca.
